There is a Horace B. Thompson listed in the 1930 Cherokee County, Texas Census, Precinct 3, District 22 (same Precinct and District as Pauline and her parents). Age 18, born TX, with parents, brothers, and grandmother. One brother is named Frankie, and the grandmother is named Mary, so perhaps this is the correct Horace?

According to Faye Kelley, Horace died of a botched appendix operation. Horace and Pete were first cousins, and according to Faye, about the time Horace died, Pete's wife died of blood poisoning, and the two families had visited over the years. Pete and Pauline began writing each other, and Pete moved to Rusk where they were married.
