    The monument is to Hiram Randall Gale, the last Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) national commander and the last living Civil War veteran in Washington State.

    Gale was born in Waterbury, Vermont on November 8, 1846. He served his country by enlisting as a private in Company K, 46th Wisconsin Infantry on March 2, 1865 and had a rather undistinguished career with the Army of the Cumberland. He and his unit mustered out on September 27, 1865 after guarding the lines of the Nashville & Decatur Railroad.

    Hiram Gale, last of the Civil war veterans in Washington state, died Thursday in the veterans' administration hospital at American Lake, near Tacoma. He was 104.
    Gale rose from an enlisted man in was days to national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1945. He was 18 years old when he enlisted in the 46th Wisconsin infantry near the end of the war between the states. He did not see battle action.
    Gale came to Tacoma in 1888 and subsequently published papers at Allyn, Wash., and at Bremerton. In 1921 he moved to Seattle where he managed a real estate business until he was nearly 100 years old.
    He is survived by two sons, Charles R. of Bremerton and Edgar L. of Seattle; a daughter Mrs. L. S. Munson of Wilmington, Del.; 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
