Facts and Events
She was six years old when her mother died, in 1891. After that, she lived with her father and brothers until she was sent to America in 1896. Note from her son, Albert: "Mom was about nine years old when she came over. They just put a tag around her neck with her name and destination on it and put her on the boat all by herself. She was supposed to go to Ellis Island but somehow she was put ashore in Boston and her uncle looked for her for over a week until he found her. How he made connections I just don't know." Her granddaughter, Diane Friar, remembered that she was put in an orphanage until she was found. In 1910 she lived in Winburne, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania with an uncle, Carl Gustav and Christine Belin and their two sons. Next door to them was another uncle, John and Elizabeth Belin and their children. Obituary SABEY Hilda B. Sabey, beloved wife of the late John F. Sabey; loving mother of Albert J. Sabey and LeRoy H.
