Herman never married. Family rumors have it that the bachelor brothers upon moving to Arizona became part of what is known as the "Arizona Land Swindle." They reportedly took pictures of a piece of land near San Diego, CA near a lake that was surrounded by palm trees. These pictures were then sent back east and described as land available in Arizona, where the land was purchased by unsuspecting easterners. Needless to say, Lial and Herman remained only a few steps ahead of the law.
