Facts and Events
Herbert THIEM was a Trooper in South Africa during the Boer War : \begin{quote} ``He was only 46 years of age, and came to this country from Australia in 1900, and enlisted in Brabant's Horse, seeing considerable service in that regiment as R.S.M. \end{quote} -- quote taken from a South African news clipping (The Rand Daily Mail) in 1918.\\ \begin{quote} ``He was later transferred to Johannesburg Mounted Rifles, and went through the remainder of the campaign as lieutenant in that unit. At the conclusion of hostilities, Mr. Thiem started business at the Trocadero\footnote{The business referred to as Trocadero was the Trocadero Restaurant.}, in Pritchard street, Johannesburg. During the last two years he had practically retired from active business, and devoted himself to farming in Makokskraal, in the Potchefstroom dictrict. ``He was a man of sterling worth and integrity, writes The Rand Daily Mail, and ``was universally respected by all who knew him, and his many kindly acts will never be forgotten. He left behind a widow and one married daughter. \end{quote} -- quote taken from a South Australian news clipping (it paraphrases the Rand Daily Mail account in South Africa)\\ As a result of his active service during the war he was awards several Boer farms. The Boer ex-owners subsequently returned and worked as overseers. Herbert's brother, Walter Edward, managed one of these farms. References
