Facts and Events
Information from 2009 e-mail from: dawoakes@@worldnet.att.net Henry Munday Marrs: In Mercer Co records he is found as Henry Munday/Monday or Munday Marrs or Henry M. Marrs. There was a Munday (surname) family in Mercer Co., Ky but they were from Caroline Co., Va. and of no relationship. There are books which list his father as William Erskin Marrs with all kinds of "fancy" ancestors but just recently I heard from a Marrs descendant/researcher who tells me most of it is "fiction". However, I do belive that Henry, had a brother Samuel who lived in Mercer but ended up in Jessamine Co (adjoining county of Mercer) and in 1869 his grandson wrote a brief history. He is found on the 1782 Hampshire Co., Va. tax rolls in the district of Abel Randall - he is in Mercer Co., Ky before 1790 when he is found on a road report. The first settlers came to Mercer Co (then Lincoln) in 1774 & very soon thereafter all the land was taken up. Henry as did most of the later settlers - probably came to Mercer & rented land until he could find land to buy - he purchased land from Samuel & Elizabeth (Hughes) Taylor - present location on Higginbottom Road & accross the road from the land of Samuel Taylor. The Shawnee Run Church was nearby - in fact, Samuel Taylor had donated 1 acre of his land to this church. This land is also not far from Shakertown at Pleasant Hill. His first wife was Mary Hartt/Harte/Hart - whose father, Dr. George Hartt was an early settler of Nelson Co., Ky. A man of some importance in that area. He came to Nelson Co with a group of folks from Maryland or Penn (I have seen the history of this or place of origin but can't excally recall the exact place at this time!!). Henry M. Marrs & Mary Hartt had three children who inherited from the estate of Dr. George Hartt in Nelson Co. William & George Marrs who were over the age of 14 at that time & the youngest Catherine b 17 Jan 1777 & d 15 Feb 1815 - m Philip Negley in Mercer Co., Ky 16 Jan 1799 (her dates from her gravestone at the Shawnee Run Church) . No further record of William - he must have died without heirs before his father & George Marrs became or perhaps always was handicapped or retarded in some way for just before the death of Henry Marrs the court ruled he was "insane" and at the date of the recording of the will of Henry Munday Marrs he was placed under the guardianship of William Hughes Taylor. We don't know what happed to George but it is doubtful he left any heirs. At the time Henry Marrs wrote his will he signed with an X - perhaps he was injured or sick or as was very common - his eyesight had become very poor with age. He certainly was literate in early records. The Negley family begins with John Leonhardy Negele with his arrival on 13 Oct 1747 in Philadelphia on the ship "Two Brothers" ...shortly thereafter they lived in Lancaster Co., Penn....
