Facts and Events
Henry Emery (my 2nd Paternal Great Grandfather) was born in 1840 in Malone, Franklin, New York. By the time Henry was ten, he was living in nearby Chateauguay, New York, and at age 25 Henry met and married Jane Connor (my 2nd Paternal Great Grandmother). We believe that Henry and Jane bore two daughters Minnie and May, and either at birth, or within the year of May's birth, Jane Connor died, leaving Henry with two young daughters. In the 1880 census, Henry Emery was found in the household of Henry’s father, Daniel Emery, in Chateauguay near Malone, New York. Henry was recorded in the census as a widow, and he has no children living with him, leaving one to wonder what became of his two young daughters. Listed in this household is Henry's parents, Daniel (67) and Hannah (74) and Henry's brother, Washington Emery (42) and his wife Jane McManus (41) and their child Daniel(13). Neither young Minnie or May were found in the 1875 New York State census for Chateauguay, suggesting again that Minnie had been placed elsewhere for care. The 1875 State census also listed Henry Emery, widowed. We have not located the date of death for Jane Connor (between 1876-1879), but we do know that Henry remarried and his new wife was one, Mary Lancto, who he married between 1882 and 1886. Henry and second wife Mary bore six children together. We believe that the older Emery girls moved to Springfield to be near family, however we have not been able to confirm this believe. We further believe that they may have moved to care for their cousins. In 1869, Cousin Rosanna Emery and children purchased land. Rosanna died in 1871 leaving five children to be placed in guardianship situations. One of these children was Pascal Emery. It may be the same Pascal Emery who lived and worked in Springfield, Massachusetts, when Minnie and May lived there in 1900. This is important because it provides another link between Minnie and May Emery and Franklin County. He may have been a cousin to the girls.
