"Henry Butler, son of Elijah and Thankful (Smith) Butler, married Mehitable Norton. Henry, like his brother Elijah, Jr., was a tanner and currier, and this vocation he followed to a certain extent after coming to New Vineyard. He settled on the northern half of lot No. 4 in the second range, being a part of the territory set off to Industry in 1844.... The date of his settlement in the township is not wholly unclouded by doubt. Esq. William Allen and Hon. Francis Gould Butler agree in fixing the date 1792.... His tannery was located on a small stream not far from his house, and traces of the tan vats can still be seen. Mr. Butler at one time held a commission as lieutenant in the militia, but this was probably before he came to Maine.... He died Jan. 22, 1822, aged 75 years, 8 months. His wife died Feb. 5, 1826, aged 75 years, 2 months and 21 days."
