Facts and Events
Murderer of noted architect Stanford White on rooftop of Madison Square Garden in 1906. (White had been having an affair with Thaw's wife, actress Evelyn Nesbit, both before and during Thaw's marriage to her.) Thaw was tried twice, found not guilty by reason of insanity, and committed for life to Matteawan State Hospital. His wealth allowed him to arrange accommodations for his comfort and be granted privileges not given to the general Matteawan population. Escaped to Canada, eventually extradited to New York. Tried a third time, found sane & not guilty, and set free. Later convicted of assault in a separate case, found insane (again), and committed (again). Finally found sane (yet again) and set free.
