Facts and Events
Harriet Bartlett's origins have yet to be established. As an adult she claimed to have been born around 1804 in Chichester. Her first confirmed sighting is on 5th September 1847 when she married a gardener named William Challen at Bosham in Sussex. He had been married twice before and had several children. Harriet and William appear to have had one further son together.
The 1851 census finds Harriet, William and their children living at Shopwick just outside Chichester. Ten years later they were nearby at Rumbolsdwyke. Harriet has yet to be traced after 1861; the most likely explanation is that she was the Harriet Challen who died in the Westhampnett district just east of Chichester in 1864.
