Research Notes

Notes from German genealogist Dr. Volker Jarren

  • The spelling of the family name varies over time. We tend to see "Aydt" in the earliest records, but we also find it mixed with "Ayd" and "Aid" in the 17th and early 18th century records.
  • The oldest direct ancestor found in the records is "Hanns Jakob Aydt Jr." He and his wife, Christina, had children as early as 1668 in the Ersingen parish. Note: Records for Bilfingen did not start until 1729 and were recorded under Ersingen parish before that time.
  • "Hanns Jakob Aydt Jr." is referred to as "Junior" because there was another Hans Jakob Aydt in the parish at the time (and he also had a wife named Christina). This other couple had children as early as 1660, but the relationship between the two Hans Jacob Aydt's, although likely, is not documented.
  • Based on Ersingen birth records, it does not appear that either man was born in Ersingen (or Bilfingen) but whether they married there we do not know. Unfortunately, there are no marriage entries between 1656-1673 – not for Ersingen and not for Bilfingen.
  • There is only one other Aydt with earlier presence in Ersingen. "Georg Ayd" had children in the parish as early as 1650. He did not marry in Ersingen.
  • It is not possible yet to say whether there is a family connection between Hans Jakob Aydt Jr., the other Hans Jakob Aydt and Georg Aydt. We can definitely say that Hans Jakob Aydt Jr. was not born in Ersingen/Bilfingen and came as an adult or as a child with his parents to the Ersingen/Bilfingen parish.

When his son, Leonhard, married Anna Magdalena Bauer on 20 Nov 1695, the marriage record says he is the "son of the deceased Johann Jacob Ayd from Bilfingen..." No death record has been located in either Ersingen or Bilfingen records.
