Hannah Jackman's origins have yet to be established. She appears to have given conflicting birthplaces in the censuses. In 1851 she gave her birthplace as 'Chitham, Hampshire' - possibly meaning Chidham in Sussex but close to the Hampshire border. In 1861 she gave her birthplace as Midhurst in Sussex. She was consistent in giving ages suggesting she was born around 1825.

Hannah's first confirmed sighting is on 3rd August 1850 when she married an agricultural labourer named Richard Sims at Bosham on the Sussex coast adjoining Chichester Harbour. The following year's census finds them living with Richard's mother at Hambrook in the nearby parish of Westbourne. Hannah and Richard appear to have had at least six children, born at various locations in the area of West Sussex around Chichester.

By 1861 the family was living at Lagness in the parish of Pagham. They later moved a short distance within Pagham to the nearby hamlet of Nyetimber. Hannah died in 1868, being buried at Pagham on 6th July 1868. She was said to be 42 or 43 years old. Richard outlived her by many years, and remarried in 1872.
