Mr. Henderson was the second surveyor of Callaway Co., Mo., taking his office in 1827 ; a tobacco merchant at Portland, Mo., and later a general merchant at Fulton, Mo. He loved to hunt, but according to Mr. Glenndye, a neighbor, he was not a good marksman. Mr. Glenndye said that if Mr. Henderson ever killed a deer he would have to hold it. One day alone in the forest, Mr. Glenndye was attacked by an angry stag and dodged behind a tree, the stag continued his attack and his victim was forced to grasp the huge antlers around either side of the tree and to call for help. Mr. Henderson hearing the call, came and shot the stag. "There, I told you if you ever killed a deer I would have to hold it," was the thrust from Mr. Glenndye. ...
