According to Mom, Gordon lost his arm in an accident with a shotgun. His border crossing declaration in 1923 indicates that it was his left hand that was missing.
It appears that Gordon and Frank lived with their grandparents, Fred and Annie Krieger for at least some of the time between their parents death's and their 1923 move to Chicago to live with their Uncle "Lorens."

Lloyd and Gordon Ohlman

Their statements on the Border Crossing Manifest, port of entry Port Huron, Michigan stated that their nearest relative was their Grandfather, Fred Krieger of Palmer Rapids. They had not been to the US before, and the purpose of this trip was to reside with their Uncle Lorens Ohlman. Lloyd had no identifying marks, but Gordon had lost his left hand. Lloyd was 16 and Gordon was 14. Lloyd gave his occupation as a laborer.
