Graduated from St. Olaf college Northfield, MN in 1951, spent two years at the University of Minnesota graduate school and received a master's degree in labor relations. Spent two years in the Army (1953-55). Joined Pillsbury Company in the summer of 1955. Fulbright Scholarship to Norway in 1957-58. He was with Pillsbury Company for 27 years, ending as Vice President of Finance. Gus then was Minnesota State Commissioner of Finance from 1983-85. In 1985 he became Chief Executive Officer of the Fairview Hospital system in the Minneapolis area. In early 1989 he became senior vice president of finance and operations for the University of Minnesota. Gus received the Saint Olaf College Distinguished Alumni award in 1978.
