    (5) My paternal grandfather was Gideon Morgan, Sr., who lived near Staunton, Va. His wife was a Miss Patience Cogswell, a native of Connecticut. For years my father conducted, with two of his brothers, a wholesale business at Knoxville, Tenn. Whenever he would go to Baltimore to buy goods, he always made it a point to spend a day at Staunton, to visit his mother's grave. On his journeys my father would generally take one or another of us children with him. I have had numerous delightful trips to Washington, Baltimore, the Virginia Springs, and other points.
    (2) Gideon Morgan, Sr., had six sons all born near Staunton. Calvin, Gideon, Rufus, William, George and Luther. These six Morgan brothers were all small of stature, but in qualities much above the average man. They and their descendants have always been people to do things, and do them well.
My uncle George Morgan was the father of Senator John T. Morgan, and moved from Tennessee to Alabama. I think perhaps the latter first settled near the present Talladega, but later moved to Selma.
My uncle Luther had a son named Calvin, the father of Gen. John H. Morgan of Kentucky.
Another son of my uncle Luther was Samuel D. Morgan of Nashville, who was a distinguished business man. He was Supervising Architect of the State Capitol at Nashville and is buried in a niche in its walls. He was my first cousin and died long ago. A daughter of Samuel D. Morgan was Miss Amanda Morgan who married Mr. Wm. C. Sherrod of North Alabama, whose son is Mr. Charles Morgan Sherrod, a Lawyer at Courtland.
Speaking of North Alabama, my cousin Gen. John Hunt Morgan, was born up in your country, at Huntsville.
My uncle Calvin was father of all those Morgans around Nashville. He was a successful merchant and made considerable money.
