GIDEON was born on the family farm. He was named for the Rev. Gideon Blackburn, who accepted the call to New Providence Church, in Maryville, Tennessee.

In the spring of 1820, his father, Joseph, sent him "west" (from Tennessee) to find a suitable place for the family to settle, as he objected to slavery. In the fall of 1821 Gideon was in the region of Vincennes, Indiana, and learned the family was already moving, and joined up with them near Leavenworth, Indiana (on the Ohio River). Later, Gideon was listed as an original land purchaser in Bartholomew County: 9 Sept. 1833.

Gideon was the first Sheriff of Bartholomew County. He was also a School Commissioner. His tombstone has a Masonic symbol.

Gideon was first buried in the Sand Hill Cemetery, and as were other family members; he was later moved to Garland Brook Cemetery and re-buried, as the highway beside Sand Hill Cemetery was widened, and space was needed. He is buried next to his father, whose grave was also removed. They are buried in the George Pence secondary plot.
