Obituary in McDonald Record-Outlook, Washington County, PA, July 8, 1938: "Mrs. Gertrude May HELLINGS SLATER, 61, wife of William E. SLATER, died at 4:50 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 1938, in her home, 1*2 Center avenue, Oakdale, following an illness of 22 months. A daughter of John C. and Mary Pauline HELLINGS, she was born November 18, 1876, in Philadelphia. She attended the Wilkinsburg schools. She and William E. SLATER were united in marriage June 8, 1896, in the United Brethren church, Wilkinsburg, by the Rev. J. I. L WR**LER. Before her marriage she taught school in Blawnox, Penn township, Allegheny county, and after her marriage she taught in Pittsburgh. She had been a resident of Milltown, Unity and Butler before coming to Oakdale in 1904. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church, Oakdale, the Order of the Eastern Star of McDonald, and the Dames of Malta of Pittsburgh. Besides her husband, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. N. F. DODDS of Langeloth. A son, Wayne, died June 22, 1921. Funeral services were held Monday morning in the Presbyterian church, Oakdale, conducted by the Rev. Carl H. WHITE, D. D. Burial was in the Oakdale cemetery." References
