On November 11, 1844, Mary Ann sold her one-sixth share of the 150 acres of land in her father's estate to James H. and Emaline Williams for $150. the same tract of land was sold to Jonathan and Nancy Ann Sawyer September 4, 1847 for $165. Mary Ann and George Willing moved to Cloverport where they lived for a short period of time. George went West and at one time owned thousands of acres of land along the San Jose River in California. George and Mary Ann became very wealthy and Mary Ann loved to wear very expensive clothes. George sold a considerable part of his land in California. He left California when some people who had been stealing gold from the miners were lynched on Telescope Hill in San Francisco. They went down into Old Mexico but their engine broke down. All they had to live on was the sea and what they could steal from miners. He was robed and killed in 1874. After the death of George Willing, Mary Ann lived with her sister, Frances Horr Lamar, at various times. As recorded in a newspaper clipping pertaining to Mary Ann's death in January 24, 1909, she was living with her nephew Sterling P. Martin in Fulton, Missouri when she died. The statement was as follows: "Dr. George M. Willing died 35 years before his wife, Mary Ann "Aunt Polly" willing. She had made her home with a nephew, Sterling P. Martin of Fulton, Missouri. She died January 24, 1909 at the age of 84 years and was buried in Cloverport, Kentucky. Evidently, Mary Ann and George M. Willing had no children. |
