  4.   The death in Nashua touted by both cited sources appears to be an error. If Wheeler is correct about the second wife being Claudine Lamb, instead of Caroline Lamb, then George appears to have lived in Iowa, and died in 1886. Further, George was only five years older than Clara in 1850 census, but in 1880, he is 20 years older than Claudine, and 16 years old in 1885. So, when the 1870 census shows that he is 16 years older than wife "C. E.", it suggests that he was already married to Claudine at least 10 years before these sources say so. No death of George in Nashua in 1894 is found, no presence in the census after 1850 if he is not the man in Iowa, no sign of Clara after 1850 and no death record for Clara is found, no record of the second marriage is found. The one census record that is positively him shows an age that is three years off from what is asserted by Wheeler. More research is needed.

Source:Lamb, Charles Francis. Nathan Lamb of Leicester, Massachusetts, p. 142, says he is the George Wheeler in Iowa who married Claudine Lamb, and places the marriage in 1856. Source:Payne, W. O. History of Story County, Iowa, p. 142, apparently had a chance to interview the widow, Claudine Wheeler, and while it does not give specifics or identify George's origins, if this source is to be believed, prior to marriage George had just come to Chicago after "a couple of years in Louisiana", suggesting perhaps he separated from his wife soon after 1850. That she did not die is suggested by the presence of a Clara and Sarah Wheeler of about the right age, along with a Sarah Cook, in the 1855 census in the household of a William Jones (family 864) of Lowell, Mass. - compare to the 1850 census entry for George and Clara (family 663).
