George Henry Ward was baptised on 24th November 1844 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Mary Ward, formerly Everard, and her husband William Ward, a shoemaker and victualler. George appears in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with his parents and siblings on West Street in Great Hale. In 1861 he was described as a carpenter.
In 1866 George married Sarah Elkington at Great Hale. They went on to have four children between 1866 and 1873. The first two were born at Great Hale, but by 1871 the family had moved to the neighbouring parish of Heckington, where they lived on the High Street in the 1871 census. By this time George was working as a wheelwright.
Sarah died in 1873. She was said to be 27 years old.
The following year, George married again. His second wife was Eliza Turner from Heckington. They went on to have a further five children between 1875 and 1885 at Heckington. Each census from 1891 to 1901 finds the family living in Heckington, although Eliza was not at home on census night in 1901, as she was staying with one of their married daughters in Spalding.
George died in 1910, aged 65. Eliza survived him by just under ten years.
