George Steadman was born at Hanmer in Flintshire on 4th April 1868, son of Thomas and Hester Ann Steadman. It appears the family moved to Birkenhead when George was very small, appearing there in the 1881 census, with some of George's younger siblings having been born there.

George's next sighting is not until 1904. He does not appear to be at home with his father in the 1891 census, nor has he been found in the 1901 census.

In 1904, aged 36, George married Christina Smith, a widow who already had four children from her first marriage. George and Christina went on to have another five children together. The 1911 census finds them living with Christina's mother, Catherine, at 26 Sandford Street in Birkenhead. At this time George was working as a labourer.

They were still at 26 Sandford Street at the outbreak of the Second World War. George described himself as a retired boatman then.

George died in 1946, aged 78. Christina outlived him by four years and died in 1950, also aged 78.
