George W. Hess
George W. Hess, 87, of Marietta, died Jan 3, 2001, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 20, 1913, in Marietta, a son of the late Lemuel A. and Florence Miller Hess. He was agraduate of Marietta High School with the Class of 1931. He had been employed as an electrician for the city of Marietta and was later associated with the B.F. Sprague Electric Company for many years. He had been been general line foreman for the Monongehelia Power Company for many years until his retirement. He enjoyed working on his property and at the church and spent much of his life doing things for others. He found his greatest joy in his family. Mr. Hess was a 60-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was a devoted member of Central Christian Church where he was the oldest living member and had served his church by being a Sunday school teacher; the leader of the Men's Group; choir director; a deacon; an elder and later made elder emaritus; chairmaan of the church board and of the board of trustees. He was a50 year member and Past Master of American Union Lodge No. 1, F. & A.M.; American Union No. 1, R.A.M.; Marietta Cummunity No. 50, Knights Templar; and Marietta Council No. 78, R.S.M.; and was also z member of Marietta Chapter No. 59 of Eastern Star. On Dec 23, 1934, he married Susan Schoonover who preceded him in death on Nov. 12, 1982.
Survivors include one daughter Nellie H. Beardmore of Marietta; one son, J. William Hess and his wife Sally of Marietta; five grandchildren, Janet Mincks and her husband Gary of Marietta, Tom Beardmore, Kathy Jenks and her husband Jerry of Waterford, Michael Hess and his wife Teri of Akron, Ohio, and David Hess and his wife Preeti of Alpharetta, Ga.; four great-granddaughters; four grat-grandsons; a number of neices and nephews; one brother Dean E. Hess of Huber Heights, Ohio; and one sister, Ethel L. Gulotta of Marietta.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Satyrday, Central Christian Church. Interment in Mound Cemetery.
