From Madison County, Indiana, Index of Names of Persons and of Firms (Portrait and Biographical Record) "In tracing the genealogy of the Dipboye family in America, we find that the three brothers of that name emigrated from France, their native country, and settled in Pennsylvania prior to the War for Independence. One of these brothers George M. Dipboye, the grandfather of our subject (Jonathon Dipboye), served in the war and was held prisoner for three years. He then escaped by running down a channel of water. Later he settled in Virginia in the town of New Market, and passed the remainder of his days with his son Abraham Dipboye, the father of our subject. His wife Mary Dipboye, was a native of Germany". Family of Abraham Dipboye There was a Dipboye family in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Indiana, that may be related to our Dubois/Depoy/Deboy family. According to Portrait and biographical record of Madison and Hamilton Counties, Indiana, Chicago, Biographical Pub. Co., 1893, page 705, the “founder” of the family was George Dipboye. The book says, "In tracing the genealogy of the Dipboye family in America, we find that the three brothers of that name emigrated from France, their native country, and settled in Pennsylvania prior to the War for Independence. One of these brothers George M. Dipboye, the grandfather of our subject [Jonathon Dipboye], served in the war and was held prisoner for three years. He then escaped by running down a channel of water. Later he settled in Virginia in the town of New Market, and passed the remainder of his days with his son Abraham Dipboye, the father of our subject. His wife Mary Dipboye, was a native of Germany." Unfortunately, 19th century county histories were often highly romantic and quite inaccurate. I am especially concerned about this particular history because it is in the biography of Jonathan Dipboye, which, among other errors, misidentified at least two members of the Dipboye family. The biography listed one of Jonathan’s sisters as Mary E., who “was married to J. Hurley, and after his death to Granville Ellison; she now resides in Delaware County.” In fact, this sister was named Arbena Catherine, not Mary E. The biography also said that the wife of Jonathan’s brother Abraham was “Miss Mary Ann Impswiller.” The death certificate for Abraham’s daughter listed her mother’s name as Painter. The biography also said that Jonathan Dipboye’s maternal grandparents had remained in Pennsylvania and died there, however, Jonathan’s maternal grandmother Arbena actually died in 1850 in Delaware Co., Indiana. (See the will of Arbena Doubt at the end of these notes.) If the biography was wrong about Jonathan’s sister and sister-in-law and was also wrong about where his maternal grandmother had died, it may not be entirely accurate about the name and history of Jonathan’s paternal grandfather, who was apparently dead before Jonathan was born. I have searched for George Dipboye (and all variants of the name) in the Pennsylvania State Archives Revolutionary War Military Abstract Card File, online at: <http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/archive.asp?view=ArchiveIndexes&ArchiveID=13> It does not include information about George Dipboye’s service in the War. The caveat here: this database is fairly extensive, but certainly incomplete. I also was not able to confirm that George Dipboye was on the 1790 or 1800 censuses anywhere in Pennsylvania. I looked at all men listed as either George or Geo. After further research, I excluded all except the following: 1790 > PENNSYLVANIA > BERKS > WINDSOR TWP Series: M637 Roll: 8 Page: 73 George Deobolt 133 1790 > PENNSYLVANIA > WASHINGTON > NO TWP LISTED Series: M637 Roll: 9 Page: 180 Geo Teaboe 113 There was a George Dubois on land records in Berks Co., Pennsylvania, in 1794. This is where the Virginia/Indiana Deboy and Depoy families came from, but I don’t know if the man in Berks Co. was George Dipboye: : Warrantees of Land in the County of Berks, 1752-1890 Dubois, George 400 Aug. 11, 1794 [Source: Pennsylvania Archives, Series 3, Volume 26. Provincial Papers: Warrantees of Land in the Several Counties of the State of Pennsylvania. 1730-1898, edited by William Henry Egle, Harrisburg: Wm. Stanley Ray, State Printer of Pennsylvania, 1899, pp. 254-257.] George Dipboye supposedly died in New Market, Shenandoah Co., Virginia, about 1816, but I have not found any documentation that there ever was a George Dipboye in Virginia. The first Dipboye I can actually document is Abraham. Abraham Dipboye, said to have been George’s son. Abraham was born in 11 October 1785 Pennsylvania and died 26 Dec 1835 Henry Co., Indiana, and is buried in the Middletown Pioneer Cemetery, Henry Co., Indiana. Abraham married Roseanna, b. 8 Jul 1792, Germany d. 16 Sep 1877, Delaware Co., Indiana, buried Painter Cemetery, Henry Co., Middletown Indiana. The birth and death dates come from Abraham and Rosanna’s grave stones, so the normal caveats on accuracy apply. Their birth places come from census data. Rosanna’s parents are usually listed as George Goodyear and Arbena Summers, both born in Germany. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, the only “source” for this information is Portrait and biographical record of Madison and Hamilton Counties, Indiana, Chicago, Biographical Pub. Co., 1893, page 705 (transcribed below). As pointed out above, this family history is somewhat unreliable. We do know that Rosanna’s mother was the widow Arbena Doubt because Arbena wrote a Delaware Co., Indiana, will in 1846 naming Rosanna Dipboye as her daughter. Judging from the will, Rosanna was Arbena’s only child to survive to have children. (See a transcription of Arbena’s will at the end of these notes.) Children of Abraham and Rosanna Dipboye, named in Arbena Doubt’s will, more information about them in a separate file: 1. Judging from the birth states of his children, Abraham was still in Pennsylvania as late as 1813, when his daughter Margaret was born. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find him on the 1810 census, at least not under any variant of his name than I can come up with. Abraham was apparently in New Market, Shenandoah, Virginia, by October 1816, when his son Joseph was born. New Market is near the Shenandoah/Rockingham County line. From Portrait And Biographical Record of Hamilton and Madison Counties Indiana; Chicago: Biographical Publishing Co. 1893, page 705, with my comments in brackets: "Abraham Dipboye first saw the light of day in Carlisle, Pa, abt 1787, and there grew to manhood.[No proof that Abraham was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.] He married Rose Anna Goodyear, a native of Germany who came with her parents, George and Arbena (Summers) Goodyear [no independent proof of her parent’s names], to Pennsylvania when but a girl. In that state her parents passed the remainder of their days." [Arbena actually died in Delaware Co., Indiana.] "After his marriage Abraham Dipboye resided in Pennsylvania until after the birth of three children, and moved to New Market, Virginia about 1813. From there he moved to Henry County, Ind., in 1835, and located on a farm in Fall Creek Twp, where he died about one year later. [Abraham probably was in Henry Co. by 1832 and died in 1835.] He was a plasterer by occupation and followed that trade until his death. He was a well educated man and quite a linguist, speaking English, high and low German, and French with fluency. Studious and well posted, he was a brilliant conversationalist, and a man well posted on the current topics of the day. He was especially fond of history, and had a wonderful memory. A worthy member of the Christian Church, he was recognized as a consistent Christian man. In politics he was a Whig. By attending carefully to business he became quite wealthy, and passed his closing days in peace and comfort. His wife died in Henry County, Ind., about 1873." "The parents of our subject were married in 1808, and nine children were given them. George M., deceased, was a plasterer by trade, and died in Delaware County, Ind. while on a visit; Abraham, deceased, married Miss Mary Ann Impswiller [probably inaccurate.], and died in Middletown, Henry County, Ind; Joseph, deceased, married Miss Lucinda Summers; Daniel married Miss Eliza Cummings, and was killed while cleaning a well; Jonathan is our subject; Margaret is the widow of Sidney Grave; Mary R. was married to J. Hurley, and after his death to Granville Ellison; she now resides in Delaware County. [Mary R. was actually Arbena Catherine.] Elizabeth, the widow of Andrew [Anderson] Johnson, resides in Delaware County; and Serena married Daniel Noland, and resides near Chesterfield."
This was a fight over the distribution of Arbena Doubt’s estate involving the widow and daughter of Daniel Dipboye against the other heirs. The court documents contain a copy of Arbena’s will naming her daughter and Dipboye grandchildren. They also contain other information about the family: The following Delaware County, Indiana, Circuit Court documents are found at the: Delaware County Indiana Court Document Database, online at: http://www.munpl.org/default.asp?PageIndex=800 > State of Indiana, County of Delaware Delaware Circuit Court, Cause No. 2200 filed: 1879 Elizabeth Noland & Mary S Noland, plaintiffs vs. Margaret Graves Anna Dipboye Elizabeth J.
