George Cox's origins have yet to be established. If the age quoted when he died was correct, then he was born around 1795. His first confirmed sighting is in 1816, when he married Susan Moles at Norton in Hertfordshire. She was about ten years older than him, and originally from neighbouring parish of Stotfold in Bedfordshire.

George and Susan stayed in Norton, where they had seven children baptised between 1816 and 1830, although three of them died young. All the children's baptisms describe George as a labourer.

George died in 1830, being buried at Norton on 27th April 1830. He was said to be 34 years old. His youngest son was born at about the same time George died, being baptised twelve days after George's burial. Susan outlived George by about nine years, and remarried less than a year before her death.
