Facts and Events
George Cook was a straw hat blocker, born in about 1856 at Luton in Bedfordshire. He claimed on his marriage certificate to be the son of a James Cook. Whilst there were clearly several people called George Cook born in the 1850s in Luton, none of those who appear in the censuses obviously had a father called James.
George's first confirmed sighting therefore is his marriage on 3rd May 1880, when he married a widow named Eliza (or Elizabeth) Doherty, formerly Kempson, who had two young children from her first marriage.
Between 1881 and 1891 George and Eliza had six children together, although two died young. The 1881 census finds the family living at 4 Chequer Street in Luton. By 1891 they had moved to 23 Union Street.
Around 1893 the family moved from 23 Union Street to 2 Cowper Street, with the 1894 electoral register noting that George had been householder at both addresses during the qualifying period for that register. George has yet to be traced after 1894. Eliza was listed in the 1898 electoral register as the householder at 2 Cowper Street, and she appears there in the 1901 and 1911 censuses describing herself as a widow. No obvious death has been found for George in the Luton area. Perhaps he and Eliza separated.
