George Bonser was baptised on 28th October 1832 at East Stoke in Nottinghamshire, the son of Ann Bonser. George's father is not named on his baptism record. He had an elder sister, Eliza, whose father is also unknown.

In 1834, George's mother Ann married a shoemaker called William Haywood. However, he died after just one month of marriage. Ann was pregnant at the time and had a son, also called William Haywood, later that year. Ann then died too, aged 26. George was therefore left an orphan before he was two years old.

George and his sister Eliza and brother William were brought up by their grandparents, William and Elizabeth Bonser. The 1841 census finds the three children living at East Stoke with their grandparents. Their grandfather was a shoe maker.

By 1851, George had moved to Sheffield, where he served as an apprentice to his uncle William, who was also a shoe maker. Back in East Stoke, George's grandfather died in 1853 and his grandmother died in 1856.

George was married in Sheffield on 23rd May 1858 to Sarah Ann Tye. George gave his father's details as "William Bonser, shoemaker", perhaps giving his grandfather's name rather than admit to being illegitimate. George and Sarah went on to have a daughter in 1859 and a son in 1861. The 1861 census finds the family living at 30 Bank Street in Sheffield, with George working as a shoe maker.

George has yet to be traced after 1861. The 1871 census finds Sarah and the two children living with her parents in Sheffield. She described herself as married, but George has not been found in that census. In each census from 1881 onwards Sarah described herself as a widow, although no plausible death for George has yet been found.[5]

  5. George is not the George Bonson who died at South Yorkshire Asylum on 7th June 1877 aged 41 - that George is described in the asylum admission register as being a seaman from Barnsley. There was a George Bonser who died on 9th April 1863 at Bangalore in India aged 29, whilst serving as a private in the 1st or King's Dragoon Guards, who would be about the right age, but further evidence needed to demonstrate that the George Bonser from Sheffield joined the army (and would conflict with Sarah reporting in the 1871 census that she was still married).
