Military[2] 1861 St. Louis, MissouriStudent at Webster College when the war started. Enlisted in the 1st Missouri Cavalry, CSA. Fought at Wilson's Creek, First Battle of Lexington [Missouri], Pea Ridge. Later attached to Sterling Price's Division.
Military[2] 4 Oct 1862 Corinth, Alcorn County, MississippiCaptured at Battle of Corinth. Briefly imprisoned at Gratiot Street Military Prison (St. Louis). Took the oath and was released. Returned to Bent's Fort, but anti-Confederate sentiment was strong in Colorado so for safety he went to live with his mother's people. He thereafter identified as Cheyenne.

    William Bent

    Raised in both White & Cheyenne worlds and fluent in Cheyenne language, he became an important source of information to anthropologists in his later life. Had three wives (all Cheyenne) & 6 children. Survived the Sand Creek Massacre, where he was wounded in the hip. Took part in the Dog Soldiers' attack on Julesburg in revenge for Sand Creek.
