There appears to be no evidence easily available online for who his parents were. Some identify his parents as George Avis and Eliza Barnaby, whose son Edmond (or possibly Edwin) (age 9) is listed in the 1871 census. Others say his parents were Edward Avis and Mary Lucas - they had a child Edward listed as their son (age 8) in the 1871 census[2] and as their grandson (age 19) in the 1881 census[3].
