Frederick Winch was born on 21st November 1863 at Codicote in Hertfordshire, England. He was the son of a plaiter called Sarah Winch, formerly Piggott, and her husband Thomas Winch, a farm labourer. Frederick appears in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Codicote.
In 1883, Frederick emigrated to America, sailing on the 'City of Paris' from Liverpool to New York. On arrival, he gave his intended destination as Canada, although no evidence has been found to suggest he made it there. Instead, he returned to England to marry Sophia Hornet in 1885 at Wheathampstead, a couple of miles from Codicote, and returned to America with her later in 1885. They settled in the Boston area in Massachusetts, where Frederick worked as a house painter.
Frederick and Sophia had four children together, although only two survived infancy. In 1887 Frederick began the process of becoming a naturalized American citizen, which he completed in 1893. In 1895, Frederick's brother William emigrated to join them, living with Frederick and Sophia in both the 1900 and 1910 censuses. In 1896, Frederick joined the Masons, and appears to have been a member for the rest of his life.
In 1900, Frederick, Sophia and their two children travelled back to Britain for a visit, staying for nearly a month.
By 1910 the family was living at 39 Pomeroy Street in Boston.
Frederick and Sophia paid one final visit back to Britain, in 1927, staying for about a month in Codicote.
The 1930 census finds Frederick and Sophia still living at 39 Pomeroy Street. Frederick reported that he owned the house and that it was worth $6,000.
Frederick died on the last day of 1936, aged 73. Sophia outlived him by nearly ten years.
