"Frederick, at the age of 26, was made manager of Richland Peat Mines, a Corporation organized for the purpose of harvesting and processing peat moss which is sold all over the United States. He is a member of Hancock Lodge No. 4 F and A, Castine, Maine. He has shown marked talent in developing new machinery, having been the first one to improve on a baling machine so that it was possible to use corrugated cartons to pack peat into - burlap having been used for centuries. He also invented and built a so-called scurfer used for removing the top of the bog by machinery instead of by hand." -Genealogy of the Wardwell Family; Ralph S. Wardwell of Castine, Maine; March 1943
