OCCUPATION: Surveyor for the New Zealand Company. He was sent by the company to New Zealand to survey sites for British settlements, spending the years 1841-1846 in that country. He first played a role in the founding of Nelson as explorer and surveyor. This part of his life (1841 - February 1844) was very eventful as the New Zealand Company settlers came up against Maori not willing to allow settlement. Tuckett was himself involved in the violent Wairau incident though he refused to bear arms being a Quaker. In 1844 he surveyed the region around present day Dunedin and selected the site of "New Edinburgh". He was largely responsible for the negotiations which led to the purchase of the Otago Block from Ngai Tahu, the southern Maori tribe. It is in this sense that he may be described as a founder of Dunedin though he had left the country by the time Dunedin was taking shape.
