OBITUARIES - ROCKLAND COURIER - GAZETTE March 26, 1996

Former insurance agent Newcomb Rockland - Frederick "Ted" Newcomb II, 76 died March 23, 1996, after a long illness with cancer. He was a Lieutenant in the Navy during Worked War II, aboard USS Dionysis in the South Pacific. He was an insurance agent with the former Clarence F. Joy Insurance Agency which merged with the John C. Paige Insurance Company, then the Fred S. James Company. In 1973 he was president of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of Maine, Mr. Newcomb was born in Scarborough Feb. 18, 1920, J. Harold Newcomb and Jeanette Harmond Newcomb. He went to school there, and graduated in 1941 from the University of Maine. He belonged to Aurora Lodge of Masons and the Elks Lodge in Rockland, was past president of the Rockland Kiwanis Club, and a director of the Rockland Corps of the Salvation Army. He was a long-time member and a former trustee of the Rockland Congregational Church. As an ardent sportsman he was past president of the Maine chapter of Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, skiing, and especially after retiring he enjoyed golf and bowling. A talented cook, Mr. Newcomb was known for the relishes he made each fall. Friends and relatives would bring him baskets of summer harvest, hoping to receive gifts of relish. Surviving are hid wife, Maizie Joy Newcomb, whom he married in December 1944; daughter Florence Verrill and her husband Ted of Southport, Ct.; son Frederick Newcomb III and his wife Jane of Owls Head; two sisters, Mary Lello and Nell Elizabeth Taylor of Scarborough; brother K. Joseph Newcomb of Scarborough; five grandchildren, Abbie, Jessie and Jacob Newcomb of Owls Head, and Gordon and Sarah Verrill of Southport Ct.; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Burpee-Strong Funeral Home. A celebration of his life will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at the Congregational Church on Limerock Street.
