Frederick Charles Mitchell was born in 1893 at Coventry in Warwickshire, son of Harriet Mitchell, formerly Bastock, and her husband Alfred Mitchell, a labourer. His birth was registered as 'Charles Frederick Mitchell' but he was generally known as Frederick (or Fred), and his death was registered as 'Frederick Charles Mitchell'. He was the youngest of the couple's five sons, although one had died as a baby leaving four surviving sons.
Some time between 1893 and 1899 something happened to Frederick's father, leaving him in Coventry Union Workhouse, apparently disabled and unable to look after himself or his family. There must have been a very real danger of the whole family having to enter the workhouse. Frederick's mother started a relationship with a man named Edward Scholes Feary, having six children with him between 1899 and 1904, although at least three of those died as babies. The family briefly moved to Rugby around 1899, but returned to Coventry by 1900. The 1901 census finds Frederick living with his mother, Edward Feary and his brothers at house 11 in Court 2 Thomas Street - a small courtyard property with two rooms to the south-west of the city centre. Between 1901 and 1902 the family moved over the road to house 2 in Court 11, Thomas Street.
In October 1909, Frederick's mother died aged 43. A couple of months later his father Alfred died in Coventry Union Workhouse, aged 54. Frederick was therefore an orphan at the age of 16. The 1911 census finds Frederick still living at house 2 in Court 11 Thomas Street with Edward Feary, who clearly continued to look after Frederick and his brothers after their mother's death, as well as looking after the children that he and Harriet had had together.
At the time of the 1911 census, Frederick was working as an errand boy for a tobacconist.
Frederick appears to have died at the age of 27, in 1921.
