Facts and Events
He practiced medicine on Long Island beginning in 1844, then moved to Brooklyn in 1851 and practiced there for a few years. He began writing medical columns for the newly-founded New York Times, was invited to join the staff full-time, and became one of the paper's first associate editors. He also was elected to the New York State Assembly about 1848 from Suffolk County, and again from Brooklyn in 1858. He moved to San Francisco in 1859 to become editor, and subsequently part-owner, of the San Francisco Evening Bulletin. He wrote and published The History of California (San Francisco: H. H. Bancroft, 1866) -- the first comprehensive history of California -- and died a few days after editing was completed. References
