FRANCIS J McGOWAN--- Orillia Packet & Times, 9 Oct. 1930 On Saturday, Sept 27, (1930) at his residence, 14 Coldwater Road there passed away one of the pioneers of Mara township in the person of Francis McGOWAN. Mr. McGowan was born in the township of Brock in 1852, being the son of the late Francis McGowan and Bridget Doyle, early settlers of Brock. When still a young man he took up a bush lot on the 9th concession in the township of Mara and by his untiring effort he had the satisfaction of seeing this bush farm made into one of the finest in the vicinity. In 1885 he was married to Honorah Healy and them a family of 11 children were born. In 1911 he disposed of his farming interest in Mara and moved to Orillia where he became engaged in building and teaming. In 1916 on the death of his eldest son in Colorado, he moved to Ordway, Colorado, and for some time was engaged in ranching. In 1923 he took up residence in Detroit but owing to failing health he removed to Orillia about a year ago. Mr. McGowan is survived by his wife, one son and seven daughters; James of Detroit, Mrs. P.J. McCorkell, Big Valley, Alberta, Mrs. W.H. Gallagher, Hamilton, Mrs. J.J. Murphy, Orillia, Mrs. H. N. Van Loon, Detroit, Mrs. R. Whalen, Orillia; One brother and two sisters also survive, Michael of Tacoma, Washington; Mrs. J. McGrath, Toronto, and Mrs. Wm. Hodgins, Cannington. The funeral was Tuesday Sept. 30 at 8 o’clock at the church of the Guardian Angels where mass was celebrated by Rev. Father S. McGrath, nephew of the deceased, assited by the Rev. Fathers Flanagan, Murphy ,Ryan, Healy and Gallagher. Interment was made at Uptergrove cemetery. The pallbearers were Jas. Mugan, John Boyle, Dr. S. McGowan, Fred McGowan, Steve McGrath and Wm. Gallagher.
