Mr. Francis Pope of Newport was made a freeman May 4, 1703 and Sheriff on 3 May 1704 (R.I. Col. Rec., III, 473, 499). On 5 Jul 1715 it was ordered that whereas Mr. Francis Pope (late sheriff deceased) et al. had built a small room in the Colony House for keeping the court rolls and other records, 40/each was to be paid to Weston Clarke and Col. John Cranston for the use of the children of said Francis Pope deceased (ibid., IV, 195).
