Francis Lord was appointed deputy to the Upper Court in Accomack County, Virginia in 1674. an d was named deputy by Sheriff John Culpeper, first cousin of thefirst Lord Culpeper and Uncl e of Lady Francis Culpeper Berkeley, wife of Governor Berkeley. The Lord family owned land o n the Eastern Shore in Deleare in 1876. Lord Culpeper was among the courtiers who accompanie d Charles II in exile inthe years before be hecame at the Restoration, and it was for this re ason thatthey were granted in 1673, "all the dominion of land and water called Virginia."

This is from the letter to Mrs. Nash M. Love referred to above: "It is significant that Rich ard Lord, legal agent for Dublin, Ireland, became prominentduring the Restoration period an d was the father of Rev. Daniel Lord, Recotr ofMarragh, County Cork, associated with the Some rville family, who was awarded the Lord Coat of Arms used as a crest by the wife of Thomas Lo rd of Hartford, Connecticut. This Thomas Lord had a son, John who was prominent in Straffor d County, Virginia, from which some Lords came to Wilkinson County, Georgia. WilliamPaine Lor d of Camden Deleware, Governor of Oregon, said his family came to America with Lord Baltimore , and I have written statements from Governor Lord's daughter Elizabeth of the connection wit h Lord Somerville." The Captain Lord referred to here was a justice on the Westmoreland Count y, Virginia, court and sat there with the grandfather of George Washington, Captain Lawerenc e Washington. Gov. William Paine Lord of Oregon was Chief Justice on the Oregon Supreme Court and compiled Oregons laws still in use. A lesser note - my father was mayor andmunicipal judg e of Wiggins, Mississippi, but was not a law school graduate, and arrangement often found i n smaller communities in past time.
