Mary Ella Rice had a sister named Elizabeth. She became pregnant out of wedlock and married a very old man [8 years older than herself, and apparently the father of her child] for respectability. Mary Ella and Elizabeth had their children around the same time. Elizabeth brought over her newborn and asked her to watch him for the day but never came back, she ran off to the States [possibly true - her husband remarried in 1918]. Mary Ella's mother-in-law Margaret Service took the baby in and raised him as her own.

   His name is given as "Newell Gerald Floyd". It has been known for the Ontario Birth records to have the name fully reversed - that is, this could have meant his name was Floyd Gerald Newell. Subsequent records imply that his name was Floyd Gerald, not Gerald Floyd.
