12 Jan 1784: Menallen Monthly Meeting minutes: "The Women's Meeting informs this that Mary daughter of Finly McGrew hath left the parts in a disorderly manner with a young man in the night season. Which being considered in this Meeting wee appoint James Watson and Jonathan Wright to assist them in writing to some friends of Hopewell Monthly Meeting to treat with her on behalf of this meeting and endeavour to inform them selves whether or no or in what manner they were married." (Based on subsequent entries it appears that Mary McGrew eloped with Jacob Ong and these entries place the couple at the Quaker settlement in the northern Shenandoah Valley centered at Hopewell Meeting in Frederick County, Virginia near the Berkeley County (now WV) line.)

Finley McGrew was born on the 13th day of the 1st month, 1735 to James McGrew and Mary Dicks.[1] The maiden name of his mother was Mary Dicks (Dix) as proved on his parent's marriage record recorded on Mar. 25, 1735 at the Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church, Wilmington, Delaware.[2]

Finley McGrew was the eldest son of James and Mary (Dicks) McGrew. He married Dinah Cox in York (now Adams) County, PA.

On Jun. 9, 1783, Finley McGrew produced a certificate to the Menallen Monthly Meeting for himself, wife Dinah and 8 children; James, Mary, Nathan, Finley, Dinah, Rebecca, Margaret and Jacob, from Hopewell Monthly Meeting bearing the date of Apr. 7, 1783 which was read and received.[3] Missing from this list was their eldest son, John.

The births of Finley and Dinah's children were recorded at the Menallen Monthly Meeting in Adams County, Pennsylvania.[4]

    John, born Oct. 13, 1760
    James, born Dec. 1, 1762
    Mary, born Oct. 2, 1763
    Nathan, born Jun. 1, 1765
    Finley, born Mar. 27, 1767
    Dinah, born Mar. 9, 1769
    Rebecca, born Sep. 16, 1770
    Margaret, born Aug. 10, 1777
Although their son, Jacob, was not included in this list of births, he was identified as their son in the family's certificate of transfer dated Apr. 7, 1783 and when his mother, Dinah McGrew, requested a certificate of transfer from the Menallen Monthly Meeting to the Westland Monthly Meeting on Jul. 9, 1787 for her husband, herself and two children, Margaret and Jacob.[5]

On Jun. 28, 1788, Finley McGrew appeared at the Westland Monthly Meeting with a certificate for himself, his wife Dinah, and two children, Margaret and Jacob, from the Menallen Monthly Meeting dated Oct. 15, 1787.[6]

They removed to N. Huntingdon Township (after 1835 Sewickley Township), Westmoreland County, PA.

Finley died at the age of 76 years on Apr. 9, 1812. His death was recorded at the Providence Monthly Meeting.[7]

Finley McGrew's will was proved 11 Apr 1812. Finley and Dinah McGrew are buried in Sewickley Friends Burying Grounds, Sewickley Township, Westmoreland, PA.[8]
