Fern Olga Hurn Fortney was born in Granby, Mo., on July 24, 1920, the daughter of Harvey James Hurn and Golda Hope Benintendi Hurn.

She entered into rest on June 23, 2004, at the age of 83.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Neosho, Mo. She attended elementary schools in Granby and Newtonia before moving to Neosho in 1932 and graduated from Neosho High School in 1938. She was a government employee at Camp Crowder during World War II, working as a classification specialist in the Military Personnel office. She was a Newton County Deputy Recorder of Deeds for four years and was secretary to the high school principal for four years at Neosho High School. She moved to Torrance, Calif., in 1956 and was employed by the Torrance Unified School district for 18 years, working at district headquarters as secretary to pupil personnel principal at North High School. She retired in 1977 and following retirement, returned to Neosho in 1985 with her husband.

She and Jack L. Fortney were married on June 30, 1956, in California and he survives. They had no children. She is survived by one sister and two brothers, Russell A. Hurn, of Joplin, Mo., Maxine Mitchell, of Neosho, and Bert C. Hurn, of Neosho. She was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Moore.

Services will be Saturday, June 26, at 10 a.m. at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, Dr. Jerry Seigal will officiate. Burial will be in the Neosho I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Home Thursday from noon until 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Home.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Fortney may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, in care of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho. Arrangements are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho. Published: 2004-06-24
