Fanny Ann Tickel was baptised on 6th December 1833 at Plymouth in Devon, daughter of a husbandman named John Tickel and his wife Sarah. At the time, the family was living at Laira Bridge, to the east of Plymouth, where a relatively newly-built toll road crossed the estuary of the River Plym.
By 1841 the family had moved into the town of Plymouth, settling at 12 Victoria Street to the north of the town centre. Fanny appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living here with her parents and siblings.
On 28th August 1859, aged 25, Fanny married a sawyer named Robert May. They continued to live at 12 Victoria Street for the first few years of their marriage, before moving a short distance around the corner to 1 John Street some time between 1871 and 1881. Fanny and Robert appear to have had at least six children together.
Fanny died in 1905, aged about 72. Robert outlived her by about seven years.

BAPTISMS solemnized in the PARISH OF SAINT ANDREW, in PLYMOUTH, in the County of DEVON, in the Year 1833 No. 1774 When Baptized: 6 December 1833 Child's Christian Name: Fanny Ann D of Parents' Name - Christian: John and Sarah Parents' Name - Surname: Tickell Abode: Lerie Bridge Quality, Trade, or Profession: Husbandman By whom the Ceremony was performed: C.G.J. Smith, Curate
"Lerie Bridge" is presumably a variant spelling for "Laira Bridge". In the 1861 census Fanny's place of birth is recorded as "Lady Bridge" which is presumably a mishearing or mistranscription of Laira Bridge.

Although the name here is given as "Emma" rather than "Fanny", given the husband, address, age and birthplace it is considered highly likely that this is actually Fanny.
