Eva was the fifth child in a very large family. Six of her brothers and sisters, in addition to herself, survived to marry in adulthood.

"In the 1600s, the family of Eva was referred to as suffen Berg or vondem Berg, meaning that in the middle ages they were serfs of the estate on the mountain. Perhaps they referred to the nearby mountaintop castle, Freusberg. Eva's parents lived in Scheuerfeld."
