Letter written by Eugene J. McLean to Lester... in 1966: "We came to Port Huron in 1883 and went to Bay City and then to Clevela nd Ohio, then back to Bay City then in 1886 we moved to AuGres into Geor ge Ferguson's camp which was on my farm. We hired their [sic] for 1 1/2 y ears. Then we moced to Johnnie Badour's house, which is now called the Ea gle Place, where Pat lived for a while. Dad bought the farm and built a l og house on it in 1886. John was born in February of 1887. At that ti me there was only 3 teams of horses between AuGres and Delano settlemen t. They were owned by Ed Johnson, Paul Badour and Bill Campbell. Dad wor ked in summertime on Boone Farm and in winter in the woods and in the spri ngtim, drive the [Rifle] river. In 1900 Dad built camp and lumbered two w inters near the county line between Iosco County and Sims County (Township ?). He banked his logs at Herman City near Singing Bridge. Mr. and Mrs. McLean grew up in Canada, but their folks came from Tyrone, I reland and lived in Canada the rest of their lives. After moving on the f arm dad raised a team of oxen and we done our farming for about 10 years b efore he got a team of horses, and he never owned a tractor. I am his thi rd son and remember a good many passed away. I am now 85 years youn g. I am the oldest son living and I was at your last centenial [sic] a nd married many old friends. I now live in Grand Blanc on a small farm. N ow Calvin, you can pick out of this what you want to use. I am retir ed 15 years now, raised a family of 10, 3 girls and 7 boys, lost 3 boys a nd the rest of them be home very often. I and the Mrs. are enjoying li fe in fullness. Our neighbors [in AuGres] are...William Campbell, Johnn ie Campbell, and old man Munson, William McLean ...Mr. Tonkey, the the ro ad is named after. The first Catholic said mass in AuGres was said at widow Badour's sou th of the church. The first couple wed in the Catholic church was John Ki ng and Anna Proulx. The first train came in AuGres in 1904. I saw i t. I was 22 years old at the time. I was cooking for Mag Heatley in t he Lagnes Hotel, now where the Herb Proulx house is. We are married 60 y rs last January 23. My wife was Miss Ida Shirkey. Our address is Euge ne McLean, 5406 Howe Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan. We have lived in Genes ee county 49 yrs.
