[tusc-essex.ged] The early settlers of Dover Township were principally Pennsylvania German s. They remained citizens of the township, almost without exception, throu gh life, and the descendants of many still dwell in the abodes of their an cestors. In later years an almost purely German stream of emigration has b een filling the hills and vales with citizens; so that at this time the pr eponderating element of population is of this nationality. Among other ea rly pioneers who arrived prior to 1812 and located in the western pa rt of Dover Township, may be mentioned Mathias Burchfield, Christian Noftz inger, Abraham Overholt, John Burkholder, Jacob Crites, Henry Kretzer, Isa ac Thomas and John Wible. Christian Noftzinger entered, and occupied unt il his death, the southeast quarter of Section 18, Township 9. Abraham Ove rholt owned the northwest quarter of Section 12, Township 8, and Mathias B urchfield the east half of Section 11., Township 9. These three families w ere related, came from Pennsylvania. and one winter lost eleven members fr om typhoid fever. John Burkholder entered and settled on the southeast qua rter of Section 22, Township 9. Jacob Crites, a German, and his two son s, Andrew and Jacob, owned the south half of Section 10, Township 8. Hen ry Kretzer was the first individual owner and settler on the northeast qua rter of Section 8, and Isaac Thomas of the northeast quarter of Section 1 0, same township. John Wible, a Pennsylvanian and member of the United Bre thren Church, settled in the southwestern portion of the township. Other s ettlers, who came a little later and also founded homes in the western por tion of Dover, were Benjamin Hostetler, Christian Kohr, Adam Snyder, Jac ob Smith, Edward Wolf, in Township 9, and Benjamin Baer, Jacob Haverstoc k, John Muma, George Pollins, Jacob Shoup, Frederick Swinehart, John Jac ob Shoup, Joseph Shrock, Michael Welty and Peter Walter, in Township 8. Be njamin Hostetler settled on the southeast quarter of Section 21. Christi an Kore entered, and resided until death, upon the southeast quarter of Se ction 13. Adam Snyder, a Lutheran, entered and occupied the southeast quar ter of Section 20. Jacob Smith settled on the southeast quarter of Secti on 12, where be died. Edward Wolf lived in the southwest quarter of Secti on 11. Benjamin Baer, a Pennsylvanian, was the possessor of the northea st quarter of Section 2, Township 8; Jacob Haverstock, the northwest corn er of Section 3; John Muma, the northeast quarter of Section 1; George Pol lins, part of the southwest quarter of Section 9. Jacob Shoup and his s on John Jacob, Winebrennerians, owned and occupied the northwest quart er of Section 9; Joseph Shrock, the northeast quarter of Section 13. Micha el Welty and Peter Walter owned the northwest quarter of Section 11. Frede rick Swinehart, a Lutheran, entered and farmed the southeast quarter of Se ction 9. He was a life-long resident of the township. Richard Burrell, Ph ilip Baker, Jacob Welty and others, settled further east. [History of Tusc arawas County, Ohio, 1884] References
