Ernst Salzer volunteered to serve in the Union in St. Louis, Missouri on March 31, 1864. He served as a drummer. He was a private in Company I and Company F, 2nd Regiment, Missouri Infantry. He is described as being 5 feet tall, with fair complexion, brown eyes, and red hair. He was located in Cleveland, Tennessee on April 22, 1963. He was transferred to Company I, 15th Regiment, Missouri Infantry on October 18, 1864. He was located in Chattanooga, Tennessee on October 22, 1964. He mustered out of the army on December 25, 1965 in Victoria Texas.

Ernst was a member of the G. A. R.

Ernst is buried in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, Henry County, Missouri.
