Ernest Arthur Kingham was born on 10th October 1901 at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, son of Sophia Jane Kingham, formerly Gayton, and her husband Arthur William Kingham, a railway porter. The 1911 census finds the family living at Batford, close to Harpenden East station, which is therefore probably where Ernest's father worked. Batford at the time straddled the parishes of Harpenden and Wheathampstead; the family lived the Wheathampstead side of the boundary, but had a Harpenden postal address.
In 1925, Ernest married Minnie Nicholls, who was also from Harpenden. They had two sons in the late 1920s in the Harpenden area, after which they moved to the north-western suburbs of London. Ernest worked on the railways, based at the London Midland and Scottish Railway's Cricklewood sidings.
At the outbreak of the Second World War the family was living at 16 Midland Brent Terrace (later renamed Brent Terrace), immediately overlooking the Cricklewood sidings. Ernest was working as a railway passenger shunter at the time.
Ernest lived at Brent Terrace for the rest of his life. He died on 8th September 1989, aged 87. Minnie outlived him by about 15 years.
