Erling Alvsson ruled over Østland and was one of the most powerful noblemen in Norway.[3]

He was a nephew of Duke Skule (claimant to the royal throne in 1239). This connection to royalty was mentioned by Queen Margrete in 1390 when she gave property that Sir Rane Jonsson and Earl Alv Erlingsson had owned to their descendant Kristina Nikulasdatter.[1]
