ERASTUS CHASE TORREY
Son of Dr. Erastus and Gratia (Chase) Torrey, was born in Cornish, N. H., March 22, 1807. His father, who was a graduate of Dartmouth Medical College in 1805, and a brother-in-law of its eminent founder, Dr. Nathan Smith, removed to Windsor, Vt., in 1810, and died there in 1828, aged 48.
He pursued his preparatory studies at Windsor, under Col. Josiah Dunham, of the Class of 1789, and at the Military Academy in Norwich, Vt., under Capt. Alden Partridge ; and entered the Class near the close of Freshman year.
After graduating, he studied medicine with his father, and after his death, with Dr. James Hall, of Windsor. He received the degree of M.D. at Bowdoin College, in 1830; and commenced practice in Keene, N.H. In 1832, he returned to Windsor, where he continued in practice until 1850. He then removed to Detroit, Mich., and was there engaged in mercantile pursuits until 1861 ; when he was appointed to a clerkship in the Treasury Department at Washington, D.C. He still resides in this city, holding the same office.
He was married in Prophetstown, Ill., September 12, 1844, to Eliza Sabin, daughter of Capt. Marston Cabot, of Hartland, Vt.; and has had two children, Mary and Nellie, both living.
