Emma Starkey was baptised on 28th August 1842 at the parish church of St Nicholas in Warwick. She was the daughter of a labourer and carter named William Starkey and his wife Elizabeth. At the time of Emma's baptism the family was living at Emscote, a suburb to the north-east of Warwick.
The 1861 census finds 18 year old Emma living with her parents and siblings at Wharf Street in Warwick, and working as a packer in a gelatine works.
Emma was married on 15th May 1864, aged 21, to a bricklayer named Charles Bastock, who was a couple of years older than her. Although they were both from Warwick, they married at St Michael's Church (later the Cathedral) in Coventry, ten miles north of Warwick. However, after their marriage they returned to Warwick, where the 1871 census finds them living at 5 Cherry Street.
Emma and Charles do not appear to have had any children. The 1881 census finds them still living in Cherry Street, although now at number 26. They had a boarder living with them.
Emma died at home at 26 Cherry Street on 15th December 1887. She was 45. Charles outlived her by over eighteen years.
